Geometric Archipelago:Gangs of Octagon Island/Chapter 13
Chapter Thirteen: Grand Theft Hextor
<mainstreet> ---BEGIN SESSION---
<mainstreet> Kanzel opens the lock with ease. She opens the drawer and finds trio of blocks of incense inside.
Kanzel closes the drawer and moves on to the next locked one, watching to make sure she doesn't disturb the prayers.
<mainstreet> The lock opens easily. A single cloth appears to be covering some item (or items).
Kanzel pulls it aside slowly
<mainstreet> Kanzel: As you pull it aside with one hand, you notice that it appears to be sticking to your hand. It won't come off.
<mainstreet> Underneath the top of the cloth you see a small metal box and a ring.
Kanzel grabs those.
Kanzel slunks to the last drawer.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: This lock refuses to budge.
Kanzel tries again
<mainstreet> This time, the lock opens.
Kanzel peeks inside.
<mainstreet> You see more incense, apparently identical to the other incense you obtained. Again, three blocks. Also, an outfit appopriate for a cleric of Hextor is present. Apparently someone's spare?
Kanzel nabs it and shoves it in her bag.
Kanzel looks around the room for anything else of interest.
<mainstreet> There's a lot of interesting looking things on the altar, indeed there is. It's a shame you can't get closer.
Kanzel turns herself invisible and shuffles in for a closer look
<mainstreet> On the mammoth altar, you notice a mammoth golden statue of Hextor himself, complete with emerald eyes. You also notice a pair of golden cups, and several scrolls that are bound up tight.
Kanzel sneaks back over to the doorway and grabs Ascii and Brelius. "Give me thirty seconds and stagger into the room drunk and looking to pray or something. They're looking at stuff I want to grab. And then watch to see if one of them get stabbed."
<Capn_Ascii> "Can do!"
Kanzel sneaks back over and waits.
<Brellius> "Are you fine doing that alone, or should I join in?" Brellius whispers
<Capn_Ascii> "Yeah, I have an idea." Ascii quietly leads Brellius out into the corridor outside so they can make a proper entrance.
<Capn_Ascii> A few moments later Ascii leads Brellius back in, this time being intentionally loud and clangy in his armor. He's holding a piece of parchment from his pack that he's drawn a crude, nonsensical map on, and talks in a loud voice. "No, no, no! I told you, the fiesta lounge is *this* way!"
<Brellius> "You're holding the map upside-down! It's *that* way!"
Kanzel watches the prayers to see if any of them turn to look.
<mainstreet> Two of the prayers get up and start walking towards the two crazy dudes.
<mainstreet> "Can I help you?" a man with a deep voice asks.
<Capn_Ascii> "Yeah, we're looking for the fiesta lounge. We don't want to be late to the big luau."
Kanzel looks to see if anyone is watching
<mainstreet> Kanzel: Two of the three clerics seem to be bowed low. One, however, is still staring at the statue.
<mainstreet> "Uh... if you're thinking of the place I think you mean... back down this corridor, third left, then... second right, I think... or was it third? Something like that..."
Kanzel hides behind the altar and waits for none of them to be looking.
<mainstreet> "No, no, you dummy, it's fourth left, then *first* right," the other man informs the first.
<mainstreet> "Fourth left? I thought that was the furnace?"
<mainstreet> "No, the furnace is fourth *right*."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: After a minute or so, the third person starts to bow their head. But another might be coming up quickly... you have a few seconds at most!
<mainstreet> "What about the janitor's closet?"
Kanzel grabs two of the scrolls while no one is looking.
<mainstreet> "You don't know anything, do you?"
Kanzel hurridly reads them.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You can't make heads or tails of either scroll. They look like spell scrolls to me.
Kanzel stows them and watches for another oppurtunity.
<mainstreet> THe lady in front puts her head up for a minute and a half or so. She seems familiar... hmm, oh, there's your chance!
Kanzel grabs two more.
<mainstreet> Meanwhile, the other two clerics continue to bicker.
<Capn_Ascii> "...look, if you *wanted* to stay home this year, we could have just done that...!"
<mainstreet> "You live in this place, and you don't know anything!"
Kanzel checks the contents.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: Seeing as your invisibility goes away in about 24 seconds, you may not want to stand there and read those.
Kanzel checks for another chance.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: 18 seconds... 12 seconds... you'd better get out of there...
Kanzel reinvises herself.
Kanzel spies on the clerics.
<mainstreet> At this point, the three clerics praying in the room seem just about done. Two of them are standing up, and the third has decided to lie down and stare at the ceiling.
<mainstreet> As the two clerics lower their hoods, you recognize one -- Lindsey, who you met on the street earlier. She turns and instantly recognizes Ascii. Glaring, she quickly huffs over to the scene. The other cleric takes it upon himself to head to one corner of the room, towards that third drawer.
<mainstreet> "Hey! What's going on here?" she asks.
Kanzel swipes the remaining scrolls and pockets them.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You obtain the scrolls without incident.
Capn_Ascii thinks quickly, and realizes the perfect means to get out of this. "Lindsey, baby! Fancy meeting you here. Me and my friend here were just on our way to a big luau party, and I'm in need of a date. Care to join me? Eh? Eh?" He waggles his eyebrows suggestively.
Brellius rolls his eyes.
Kanzel quickly examines the small metal box she obtained.
<mainstreet> Lindsey responds with a quick face slap. "Absolutely not, you pathetic weakling. Get out of here. NOW!"
<mainstreet> Kanzel: It's a small metal box that seems to be sealed tight. You don't see any method of opening it right away.
Kanzel then examines the ring
<mainstreet> Kanzel: It looks like a plain silver ring.
Kanzel repockets both and tries to remove the sticky cloth.
<mainstreet> The cloth fails to come off your hand.
<mainstreet> The cleric nearest the drawer opens it... and finds it empty. "Hey! The ring and box are gone!"
<Capn_Ascii> "Ow!" Ascii cringes, and wishes he hadn't left his visor up. "Sheesh, I was just asking."
<mainstreet> Lindsey turns around. "WHAT?" She glares across the room for a second, then turns back to Ascii. "You're behind this, aren't you?"
<Brellius> "Yeah, all that armor really helps him sneak around."
<mainstreet> "Ted, go find Verpad!" she snaps out. The cleric on Lindsey's left gulps and nods. "Yes ma'am." He starts to leave.
Kanzel sneaks her way towards the door.
Kanzel cancels that action and decides instead to read the six remaining scrolls
<Capn_Ascii> "Hey, what did I do? I've been right here the whole time!"
<mainstreet> Kanzel: Five of the remaining scrolls are equally incomprehensible. The sixth, however... is labeled "Green Security Detail Gamma", and seems to contain some data on clerics assigned to various Green patrols!
<mainstreet> "I think you've stolen our items. I want them back."
<Capn_Ascii> "I did no such thing. You can search me if you want, I don't have any of your stuff."
<mainstreet> "I'm sure you'd love me searching you. But... the offer does have merits. Damian, search him!"
<mainstreet> Damian performs a quick search on Ascii.
<Capn_Ascii> "You realize, of course, that I might be concealing something beneath my armor. It'll have to come off." He winks evilly at Lindsey.
Kanzel pockets everything and sneaks towards the entrance.
<mainstreet> Lindsey rolls her eyes. "Fine. But I'm not looking."
<mainstreet> Lindsey turns around and lets Damian continue searching the outside, and Ascii's bag. "The armor?"
<mainstreet> Damian asks.
Kanzel slips around Damien and out the door, signaling Brelius that she'll be outside.
<Capn_Ascii> "Okay, if you insist." He winks again, then tugs the emergency release. *CRASH CLANG CLATTER!*
<mainstreet> Damian sighs, and starts checking the armor pieces all over the place.
Capn_Ascii stands there in his boxer shorts, grinning.
Kanzel sneaks after Ted.
<mainstreet> "Hey, Leo, come over here and make yourself useful," Lindsey calls out. "Stop standing vacantly next to that drawer." Leo starts walking to help Damian search.
<mainstreet> A while or so later, Damian and Leo finish the rather... complete search. ;)
<mainstreet> "He's clean," Damian admits.
<mainstreet> "His companion next," Lindsey orders, still not looking.
Capn_Ascii gathers up his armor pieces.
<Brellius> "Well, if it'll get me out of here without any trouble, go ahead."
<mainstreet> Damian and Leo begin their search.
<Brellius> "I'm glad I never bothered to wear full plate..."
<mainstreet> After a few minutes, they complete their search. "He's clean," Leo admits.
<mainstreet> "Damn," Lindsey frowns. "I know there's something up here... wait, wasn't there a third person before with you? A woman... where is she?" she asks, whirling back on the pair.
<Brellius> "You think she's still with us? How long do you think any woman would want to associate with this guy?" Brellius points at Ascii.
mainstreet backtracks two lines.
<Capn_Ascii> "Alright, then. See? I told you we didn't do anything." He shrugs.
<mainstreet> "Damn," Lindsey frowns. "I know there's something up here... wait, why are all our... SCROLLS missing?" she asks, gasping as she looks at the altar. "But you don't have those on you... Is there someone else with you? You had to have help!"
<mainstreet> Meanwhile... Ted and Kanzel arrive at a large room some distance away. An old elf is sitting behind a desk. "Sir, we have a situation... our most prized posessions... gone." Ted gasps out. The elf stands up quickly and they go charging back towards the shrine.
<Capn_Ascii> "Why are you focusing so hard on *us*? You just said we're clean. Maybe you just misplaced your stuff. Or..." He leers. "Maybe you're trying to cover an in-house theft by blaming a couple of poor, innocent bystanders?"
<mainstreet> "What were you even DOING here? I don't by your 'luau' story for a second, given that they just had one last night. I heard the noise..."
Kanzel slips into the vacant office and looks around.
<Brellius> "Aw, jeez, we missed it?" Brellius turns to Ascii. "I TOLD you we should've asked around for the schedule!"
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You see three desks, the one the elf was sitting behind somewhat larger. A large symbol of Hextor is in the back wall.
Kanzel hurries over to the somewhat larger desk and looks for anything useful.
<Capn_Ascii> "Really? Damn!" He growls at Brellius. "I *did* ask for the schedule! They said it was going to be sent to the room, but we never got it!"
<mainstreet> "I've had enough," Lindsey growls, walking back towards you and muttering something quickly to herself. A white light emanates from her body and flows through you. "I'll ask one more time, and I won't be nice about it. What are you doing here?"
<mainstreet> Ascii, Brellius: The two of you are aware of the Zone of Truth passing, but don't feel any sort of compulsion.
Capn_Ascii frowns with annoyance. "We're regretting missing a kick-ass party and being chewed out by a bunch of self-righteous clerics. Come on, Brellius, we don't have to sit here and take this treatment."
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You find a pair of drawers containing files that are apparently commentaries on every single member of the Church of Hextor within the city. Wow, they keep good records.
<Brellius> "Yeah...I'm sure we can find another party."
<mainstreet> "What's going on here?" booms a voice from behind Ascii. An elderly elf walks up, escorted by Ted.
<mainstreet> "A couple of people that claim to be lost... and they passed the Truth... but... all our valuable items, and our scrolls was found stolen as soon as they got here. Well, cups are still here, but that's about it."
Kanzel skims some of the files checking to see if any of the clerics have any relationship with the green gang.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You do spot a few references to "Assigned to Gamma" with some dates.
<mainstreet> "I see," the elf booms. "Well, I advise the two of you to identify yourselves, then leave our shrine immediately while we investigate this matter."
Kanzel looks for names on the files mentioning gamma.
<Capn_Ascii> "Yes, sir." Ascii responds with as much respect and dignity as he can muster given his current unperpants-ed state. "Cleric Ascii, and this is my friend Brellius."
<mainstreet> There are quite a few names, to where the DM has no desire to name every single operative for you. However, one name is of note: Jim Borketh, a name "not mentioned" by Brian.
<mainstreet> "Fine. I suggest you two leave. Immediately."
Kanzel looks for Ted, Lindsey, Damien, or Verpad
<Capn_Ascii> "Yes, sir. We're leaving now, sir. C'mon, Brellius, you can help me put my pants back on."
Capn_Ascii strolls out, still carrying his pack and armor.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: Lindsey had a brief "assigned to gamma" date, but is not currently, and hasn't been for a week. Damian and Ted do not have any "assigned to gamma" date. In fact, Ted's file is incredibly short... apparently he's only been a member of the Church for a couple of a days. Verpad's file is... conspicuously absent completely.
Brellius tags along
Kanzel grabs a piece of paper and writes down names of clerics that are currently assigned to gamma.
<mainstreet> All told, you write down 22 names, including that of Jim Borketh.
Kanzel stows the paper, closes this drawer and looks for anything else useful.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: The other cupboard in the desk has a large crystal ball in it.
Kanzel looks for anything that would prevent her from stealing such a wonderous object.
<mainstreet> You don't see anything.
Kanzel steps back and casts detect magic on the desk.
Kanzel then takes another look at the crystal ball
<mainstreet> You see a moderate aura emanating from the ball itself. You also see a... strong?... aura slightly in front of the ball.
<Capn_Ascii> Meanwhile, Ascii and Brellius return to Ascii's room, where the latter asists the former in re-armoring himself.
<mainstreet> You can tell that the strong aura is Abjuration. You can't tell offhand what the other is, but common sense can give you a strong hint.
Kanzel pulls out a crobar and tries to lift the top of the desk off while not disturbing any wards.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: The desktop doesn't budge.
Kanzel keeps pushing
<mainstreet> Kanzel: Xyzzy.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You finally manage to spot the tiny indentation in the wood that indicates the trap glyph. You manage to deactivate it.
Kanzel nabs the ball and puts everything else like she found it before heading for the door. and listening to see if anyone would notice her entering the hallway.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You try to leave the room... then suddenly lack the urge to. You feel content staying right here.
Kanzel looks around for anything that might be compelling her to stay
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You don't see anything in the room that would do so.
Kanzel tries teleporting out into the hallway.
<mainstreet> Kanzel finds herself in the hallway. She feels a rattling in her bag.
Kanzel disguises herself into a generic looking cleric and hastens down the hall.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You can feel the bag rattling as you go... well "feel" internally... there was no actual visible or audible rattle.
<mainstreet> Kanzel: You make your way to Ascii's room. That rattle keeps going on in your head, however.
<mainstreet> ---END SESSION---
